Creating a Ten-Year Traffic Safety Infrastructure Plan for the University of Georgia
The University of Georgia campus is home to more than 43,000 students, who are supported by more than 10,000 faculty and staff. The result is a vibrant and bustling campus community whose members traverse the university in a variety of ways: on public transportation, in cars, on bicycles and scooters, and on foot. The University of Georgia Office of Public Safety, in partnership with other university units, is committed to seeking out innovative and impactful ways to safely facilitate this travel.
A major component of the university’s overall approach is the creation of a ten-year traffic safety plan for UGA’s Athens campus. The initial phase of this effort—funded primarily through a three-year U.S. Department of Transportation grant—begins with an in-depth data collection effort. This will lead to policies and protocols for future roadway construction and improvements on UGA-owned thoroughfares that harness the lessons learned from the data, stakeholder engagement, and the expertise, technology, and research developed by academic allies in the project.
This initiative represents a multidisciplinary effort, enabled through an Office of Public Safety partnership with UGA’s College of Engineering, College of Public Health, and Auxiliary Services. The University of Georgia is committed to constantly improving safety throughout the campus community, and looks forward to harnessing what is learned to make this plan a reality.
