K9 Oscar retired on May 1, 2025, at the age of 9.5. Oscar was purchased in September 2016, where he began his service in Explosive Detection for the University of Georgia Police Department within the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) Program.
Over the last 8.5 years, Oscar has worked every football season and graduation. Additionally, Oscar has assisted countless agencies around Georgia’s Northeast by locating firearms, as well as safely searching areas suspected of containing explosive devices.
As part of the GEMA Program, Oscar has conducted hundreds of other safety sweeps and even worked several major events throughout the State of Georgia. (i.e., several Masters tournaments, NCAA football championship games, NASCAR, concerts, etc.).
Although he has confused some moments before going to work with playtime, Oscar’s dedicated service to the University of Georgia, as well as the State of Georgia, has been above reproach. Oscar’s desire to work and eagerness to please are a testament to his rigorous training, seconded by his breed.
Throughout his years of service, Oscar has become a welcome member of the University of Georgia community. Oscar would often be approached by staff, students, and even children, who would all receive the same opportunity to embrace his gentle side.
Lt. Lee stated, “To say K9 Oscar will be missed would be an understatement. After his many years of service, his retirement is well deserved.”
