Facilitating the safety and security of the UGA community is a shared responsibility. It relies on all of us – students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike. This responsibility is built on awareness, action, communication, and collaboration. Remain aware of your environment, take action to address dangerous conditions, communicate your concerns to others, and work collaboratively to facilitate the safety, security, and well-being of our community. You can do this by:
- Keeping your residence hall or apartment door locked.
- Being mindful of people who “tail gate” by following you into secure areas without complying with access control protocols, especially in housing.
- Securing your phone, tablet, laptop, notebook, computer, or any other personal items. If you leave your space for a moment, have a trusted friend watch them for you, or take them with you.
- Securely closing doors to classrooms, labs, residence halls, or apartment buildings behind you. If doors are locked when shut, they should remain closed and locked.
- Striving to remain alert at all times. Be aware of what’s going on around you, on our wider campus, and in our community.
- Downloading the UGA Safe app and save UGA PD’s nonemergency number (706-542-2200) on your phone.
- Signing up for UGA Alert, the emergency notification system for the University of Georgia community. UGA Alert allows you to receive emergency messages on multiple devices by text, phone call, and email.
- Calling UGA Police by dialing 911 or (706) 542-2200 if you see something criminal, dangerous, or concerning. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
- Walking and exercising in groups, and in populated and well-lit areas. Use designated walkways and crosswalks. If a sidewalk is not available, pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic.
- Wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter or other micromobility device.
- Walking with wheeled vehicles in mandatory dismount areas. Sidewalks and crosswalks are reserved for pedestrian use only.
- Utilizing available resources to safely travel at night, such as UGA Transit, Ride Smart, or escorts from Campus Safety Ambassadors.
